Jerry gets the first half to the top of the hill
Jerry's got the first half of his train to the top of the hill and has uncoupled the power plus water cars.
In the meantime, dispatch has sent the Seagull West on down the hill which empties out the siding so Jerry can get around the first half of his train!
But Jerry's following behind the Seagull West, down the hill to Oakland (back to Oakland for Jerry), so dispatch has told him he's to move at restricted speed and watch for the rear of the Seagull. Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!

The Seagull West rolls through Oakland past the rear half of Jerry's SLE
Pleased to be on the move again, Dale and Jim roll through Oakland on the main, past the rear half of the SLE that's currently doubling the hill.
From here on out it should be clear sailing all the way to Roseburg. That's good because these cars are needed by the yardmaster to build the Oakland Turn and Dole Turn for later in the day. Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!

Bringing the Seagull West into Roseburg
So Jim and Dale got the Seagull into Roseburg ... and an eager Ken Lass awaits their arrival because he needs their water cars for the Seagull East, which is still sitting in Roseburg from the beginning of the session.
Looks like the east end of Roseburg is pretty busy at the moment while they make the exchange. Since the Seagull ties up here, Jim and Dale will be looking for a new assignment.
The Seagull East is 25 cars with water cars, so it's going to need a helper ... or double the hill. Ken suggests to Dale that he take over the tunnel motor sitting in Roseburg and give the Seagull East a shove over the hill.
Meanwhile, Jim cuts off the power on the Seagull West and puts it away on the engine terminal lead at my request, and Jim goes looking for another assignment since it looks like Dale has already found his next job. Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!

Switching the Seagull West cars into the Turns
Now that the Seagull West has made it to town, I need to hussle to get the cars in that train switched into their respective destinations -- either cars for the Oakland Turn, the Dole Turn, or local Roseburg industries.
There's only one car for Champion Plywood on the east end of Roseburg. Everything else goes into the Oakland or Dole turns. Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!

Ken and Dale move the Seagull East out of town
While Ken adds the water cars to the front of the Seagull East, I give Dale some pointers on running helper engines. Then we throw Dale into the deep end and he's off with Ken helping the Seagull on it's way to Eugene.
The "scab" helper crew may be a bit green, but hey, we found one! Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!

Dale gets totally into running the helper
Dale looks like he's really concentrating on that helper and running it correctly.
As mentioned, I gave Dale some pointers on running helpers. I've found it works best if the helper starts to push first, then the head end power peals off cars until the train starts to move. The helper engineer should watch the cars in front of him and keep the coupler compression no more than halfway up the string in front of him ... less is okay as long as at least a couple of cars just in front of the helper have their couplers in compression.
If you do watch the coupler compression carefully, you generally won't put anything on the ground because of stringlining (pulling cars off to the inside of a curve because the helper is holding back too much) nor will you push cars off the outside of the curve accordian style from the helper pushing too hard.
Good helper operation takes gingerly working the throttle and paying attention to the head end (stopping when they stop, slowing down or speeding up when they do the same, and so on). It's important for the head end to always communicate their intentions to the helper so everyone coordinates their actions.
You get a real sense of accomplishment if you can "get 'er up the hill" without incident.

The SLE makes it to Cottage Grove
Meanwhile, Jerry has retrieved the rear of his train, pulled it up to Rice Hill summit, reassembled his train, and rolled on down Rice Hill into Cottage Grove.
Jerry commented to me as he rolled into Cottage Grove that that was the first time he's ever had to double the hill -- and it was great fun to see how it's done. Jerry first came to operate on the Siskiyou Line a few months ago and he's becoming one of the regulars. Glad to see he's learning and having a great time in the process!
At Cottage Grove, Jerry will drop the water cars and then roll on into Eugene.
Jerry's next assignment will be the Coos Bay Hauler east out of Coos Bay. Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!

Jordon Dobson keeps 'em rolling!
Jordon Dobson is doing a great job as dispatching tonight in this most unusual session.
He coached Jerry on how to double the hill, and in the process managed to get the Seagull West past as well. Some very interesting problems for the dispatcher tonight, but Jordon's taking it all in stride!
Because we are so short handed tonight and the session's also been cut short because we lost a good 1.5 hours at the front end from the power outage, we're not doing tricks (shifts) tonight. The dispatcher (Jordon) and Roseburg yardmaster (me) are just staying in their position the entire session -- also not typical of a more normal op session on the Siskiyou Line.
NOTE: In the background are some of the lights we use for shooting the Siskiyou Line video series, and also you can see my homemade tool cart. Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!

The power stacks up in Roseburg
With the lack of crews, the power and cabooses are starting to stack up in Roseburg. Ordinarily lots of this stuff would be out on the road on trains.
I asked dispatch if we could run a caboose hop to Eugene and get some of this excess power out of Roseburg.
His response?
"Just move some of it down to the other end of Roseburg yard out of your way ... being short handed we're concentrating on running the revenue trains! So just deal with it."

The Seagull East tops over Rice Hill Summit
Meanwhile, Ken and Dale have gotten the Seagull East to Rice Hill summit.
Dale did pretty well for his first time running a helper ... he pushed a tank car on the ground at Rice Hill west switch when he failed to notice Ken slowing the head end. After some work rerailing the car, the Seagull is on its way over Rice Hill summit! ====================================
