The Coos Bay Hauler East eases into Roseburg's west end. They contacted Brandon, the Roseburg yardmaster at the yard limits (Winston Junction) and requested details from the yardmaster on how to proceed.
Brandon has them coming into town on yard track one, just inside the yard next to the main.
The Hauler East has cars for Roseburg, so they say. Suddenly Roseburg is becoming a behive of activity! Don't forget we need to get the next Dole turn out soon! Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!
The Coos Bay Hauler East cars for Roseburg are dispersed throughout the train, so says the crew, so Brandon puts car cards on all the cars he needs to pull so he can figure out his switching moves quickly.
Oh boy! When it rains it pours ... and it's going to be time for the next Dole Turn soon. Fortunately, it's ready to go, but there's a lot of trains in town at the moment for both Brandon and the dispatcher to deal with! Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!
The dispatcher has given the Coos Bay Hauler West clearance to head on out of Roseburg down the branch, so it's pulled out of town.
While Brandon is working the Hauler East from the other end to pull the Roseburg bound cars (and add a few Eugene-bound cars as well), Conductor Jerry Sheffield (left) has engineer Anthony Elking (out of the photo) pull the power forward to pick up water cars.
Helper power engineer Joe Brugger (in the distance) is waiting in the wings to add helper assistance to the Hauler for the trip over Rice Hill. Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!
With the Coos Bay Hauler East in town on track one, the returning Dole Turn cars now moved to track two, the outbound Dole Turn cars on track three, and the pulled Roseburg-bound cars from the Hauler now on track four (out of the photo to the right), and an engine lead full of locos on track 5 (foreground), things are looking pretty full in Roseburg!
It's time to get the other Dole Turn out of town to get some working room in the yard again. And of course the Hauler East will soon be on it's way once they pull forward and cut in their helper. Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!
So Terry's going to conduct the next Dole Turn! Here he is getting ready to take instructions from the dispatcher for moving the train out of town and on to Dillard to switch the massive Roseburg Forest products facility there.
This one industry can hold up to 70 rail cars, and is a significant switching task all in itself, often taking 8-12 hours (or more) of fast clock time to do. But this massive industry on the protoype is what helps keep the Siskiyou Line in operation and likewise with the model! Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!
Ahh, now that's more like it! Look at all those empty tracks again.
Brandon now has room to switch cars, and it's time to assemble the next Seagull East from Roseburg to Eugene. That train will leave Roseburg early in the next session. Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!
Jordon Dobson (conductor, far left) and Jeff Shultz (engineer, throttle in hand) bring the "Rice Hill Rocket" back into Roseburg.
Just when things were getting quiet in town for Brandon, here comes another train with more cars, mostly for Eugene. Looks like the Seagull East is getting larger. Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!
Brandon switches the Oakland Turn cars into the next day's Seagull East, and spots the cars that go to local industries. Soon he'll have Roseburg yard looking pretty darn empty as he gets all those cars where they need to go. Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!
Brandon's got Roseburg looking pretty empty by the time the Siskiyou Line East pulls through town (the Seagull East cars are down the way on yard track four, out of the photo to the left).
At the far right is Cam Cotrill, engineer on the Siskiyou Line East. Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!
Brandon, all his work done, is nowhere to be seen as the Siskiyou Line West pulls through Roseburg. At the far right is the back of Jeff Shultz's head, conductor on the Siskiyou Line West. Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!
