Hi

Currently building a small area to test all the techniqes. I am ready to start to plan my "large" layout again. I will start over since i have all the numbers fixed regarding width and length of the room now.

I have just been looking at the January 1997 of Model railroader where Joe talks about mushroom. I did go from mushroom to doubledeck. But i really like to have just one deck visible at one time so i guess mushroom should be designed and be given a really good thought before going with the traditional doubledeck with a peninsula solution.

Here is my room. The wall inside can be moved and i can put in as many doors i like. I was thinking of having one door to access lower deck and one door to access upper deck.
If there are any clever brains here who would like to give me some hints or suggestion to my new plans you are very welcome. I am now a bit stuck on how to start.

Aisle width min: 36".
Mainline with a branchline on another deck.
The hidden staging area is designed to have a east/west staging together from the mainline.

Ok here are my final room space i have to work with:

Speedbird,

You might want to wait a month or so and buy Tony Koester's new book - Designing and Building Multi-Deck Model Railroads.

It's sure to have some good ideas in it.

Thanks. Looks like a good book. Just pre-ordered it.

I have a very good benchwork ready, but it is some doubledeck. I have never tried a doubledeck layout before. My concern is: Would a doubledeck lower the realisme to much during an ops session?

I will post my plan when it is finished. But i have the mainline on level one. And two branchlines decending to "lower level". No helix. Looks like the Bear Creek & South Jackson line to Redland.
From OP session 3 it looks like this benchwork options works very well.

I think the realism level will depend on the vertical/visual separation mostly - this is what fascia is all about.

I would also, for the sanity of your operators, plan "switching centers" offset from each other between the levels, so you don't have two or more guys fighting for the same foot of aisle space.
