Well, we just completed the last operating session of 1986 (2006) ... and I finally got the Roseburg yard limit signs installed! At the end of last op session, my crew said they would really like Roseburg yard limit signs to eliminate any confusion.

If you look just to the right of the loco's fuel tank at about walkway level, you can see the new east yard limits sign for Roseburg!
The west yard limits at Winston Junction isn't quite so neat looking, since that areas's not scenicked yet.
(By the way, this is the one area on the layout where you have a short section of traditional double deck, with the two decks facing the same direction (not facing opposite directions as on the mushroomed portion of the layout).
This op session report, we're going to focus on the Roseburg Yardmaster position. More op session report posts coming soon!

Joe,
If I remember correcctly, the scenery you are doing for Video 4 is right below Winston Jct. Am I correct? If it is, looks like you are making some progress down there. I am looking forward to the Roseburg Yard Opp pics. This will go good with your Opp session thread listed below.

Yes, Paul, you are right ... Tenmile Creek is the featured site on video 4, and it's just below Winston Junction ... I'm shooting video of every step from bare benchwork to a totally finished scene. We still need a detailed road, hand carved rock cut, water in the creek, ballast on the tracks, grass, ground cover, bushes, and trees ... all in order to finish video volume 4 ... phew!
But progress is being made -- I just wish it were faster. But the good news is, every step is being captured on video and will be shared with you on volume 4. Joe Fugate http://siskiyou-railfan.net - 200,000 hits and counting!

For the first train, we call a "Track Inspection" run

Before we really get rolling on Roseburg yard this op session, permit me one other side note first.
I knew the track could stand cleaning and I was so busy working on video volume 4 that I didn't get time to run the track cleaning car around the layout. So I recommended we call a "track inspection" special, and stuck my CMX clean machine track cleaning car on the train behind the locos (and I threw a business car on the end, just to add an offical look to the train).
Here you see the track cleaning car at the very beginning of the session entering Roseburg from the east end, being run by conductor Ron Smith (white hat) and engineer Jeff Shultz (dark green hat). Dispatch (Charlie Comstock) gave this special clearance to run while everyone else was getting started in the session and even before the clock began to tick.
The other thing I'm going to do with this session report that's new is I'm going to upload larger photos. What this means is if you click on the photo, you will get a much larger version to look at. Let me know if you like this approach (click to get a larger image)and I will do it more in future reports.

Everyone should know that those Yard Limits signs don't just make themselves... here is Joe working on one right before the beginning of the op session:

Meet the first trick Roseburg Yardmaster, Jordan Dobson
(Click to get a larger image)
Jordan Dobson signed up to be the first trick (first shift) Roseburg Yardmaster. He began the session to find his yard full of trains! We tend to just leave trains where they ended up from the last session, since that creates more of a real operating railroad feel, and helps make every session have just enough slight variety to be interesting.
So last session, Siskiyou Line East ended in Roseburg (on the main), a built Seagull East sits on track 1, the the Siskiyou Line West ended its run in Roseburg (on yard track 2), a built Oakland Turn sits on track 3 west end and a built Dole turn sits on track 3 east end! If you want to see how this looks against the Roseburg yard track plan, here's a diagram:

Here's the train call list for this session: (Click to get a larger image)
The trains with Roseburg in RED either originate or terminate in Roseburg. Lines 2 and 3 on this sheet represent two through trains currently in Roseburg from last session and need to get moving soon after the clock starts. So although there's not a lot of yard work right away, there's going to be a lot of traffic out of the yard really soon!

Crews ready while "Track inspection special" runs through Roseburg
(Click to get a larger image)
As the Track inspection special runs through Roseburg yard on track 4, you see here the other trains in a rather full Roseburg yard. The only train you can't see is the Oakland Turn, which is at the other end of track 3, and it's on the same track as the Dole Turn here on the west end of track 3. (You should definitely click this image to get the larger version where you can see the train labels better.)
Dispatch has an interesting problem as the session starts out -- four of the water cars are in Cottage Grove, with 2 water cars in Roseburg (the Siskiyou Line East is taking them). But the Siskiyou Line East also needs helpers, but to get over the hill the helpers need to take water cars! It looks like things will have to wait while dispatch gets helpers over Rice Hill into Roseburg. Dispatcher Charlie Comstock gives the first trick helper Engineer Joe Brugger a track warrant to grab a couple of water cars with his helper set and head over the hill to Roseburg.
This means everything going east out of Roseburg (namely the Siskiyou Line East) will just have to sit on the main for a while until the helper arrives. Roseburg could use a few more water cars, so the helper having to drag a couple water cars along doesn't hurt. However, the Siskiyou Line West can leave Roseburg headed west right away, since water cars are not needed going that direction, so a crew call goes out for that train.
In the meantime, there's really not much to do in Roseburg, since all the trains originating out of Roseburg (Dole Turn, and Oakland Turn) are made up and ready to go, but they don't leave for several fast clock hours yet. The last session yardmaster did his job well, getting all the cars in his yard made up into trains. So for the moment, yardmaster Jordon's just killing time, and seeing if he has any cars to spot at industries in Roseburg.

The Siskiyou Line West leaves town ...

We're a bit short on attendence tonight (12 people instead of the ideal 14-16 attending), so Matt Robbins (black shirt with the white collar) pulls double duty as the engineer *and* conductor on the Siskiyou Line West. He gets his clearance from the dispatcher and heads on out of Roseburg, clearing track 2 in the yard.
One thing to notice is Jordan has more than enough cabooses in Roseburg yard tonight. Not only does he have the four you can see in the foreground, he has another two cabooses coupled to the yard loco you can see in the right distance sitting on the yard lead.
